White Picket Chairs 1.0 and 2.0.
(Made to Order: 5-7 weeks)
Inspired by the flashy stainless steel fences and gates found throughout New York City's Asian and West Indian neighborhoods, the White Picket Chair series challenges the idyllic notion of the "American Dream" from an immigrant's perspective. These glitzy architectural elements first emerged in China in the 1980s, then quickly spread to neighboring countries before arriving in New York City, where they became iconic features of many immigrant neighborhoods. Assembled from the same polished stainless steel components used in these architectural elements, White Picket Chair 1.0 combines the iconic fence with the quintessential form of a simple chair. Its second iteration, 2.0, draws from the artist's own experience with these same components, where tightly spaced vertical spindles form the gates of many homes on residential streets in Korea.
