Furniture for Palestine Collection by Gillian Marsh

Furniture for Palestine is a collection created by Gillian Marsh, a Canadian architecture student working in NYC for the summer. Each furniture piece experiments with different techniques and designs.

The furniture is built from offcut 2 x 5⁄8“ cherry wood salvaged from a project at her design firm, with some pieces featuring salvaged leather as well. The designs are largely based on the constraints of the recycled material and the equipment at the workshop, which produced interesting furniture in both design and size. The pieces are numbered to indicate the progression of the collection as designs become more complex and Gillian develops her skills in woodworking. 

100% of proceeds from the profits of the furniture will be donated to organizations contributing to relief in occupied Palestine as well as directly to families needing support.

No.02 folding ottoman is made from salvaged cherry wood and scrap veg tan leather
saddle-stitched to the frame. Working with the leather inspired the next two pieces as well, and incurred a large learning curve with the new material. The wood frame was constructed and the leather was saddle stitched to the frame. - 14”l x 13”w x10”h

No.03 folding stool is made from salvaged cherry wood and scrap red dyed leather
saddle-stitched to the frame. This piece was completed alongside No.02 but the process went a lot smoother during the second run. - 14”l x 13”w x10”h

No.04 is largely inspired by a craigslist ad for small woven leather side tables. This is the first piece with face-face glued up wood which opened up sizing for the following projects. The wood frame is made up of salvaged cherry wood and joined by hidden dowels. The salvaged leather was laminated, sewed then glued and nailed to the wood frame with upholstery tacks. - 21”l x16”w x15”h

No.05 A & B
No.05 is the largest piece of the collection, composed of a chair and ottoman that slides
underneath to be compact in tight spaces. Due to the length of offcut wood available, the back leg posts were cut at a 20 degree angle and then joined to make a backrest. Made of salvaged cherry wood and joined with hidden dowels. 

No.06 is a mini / child size chair inspired by a midcentury style chair from a furniture page on facebook. This was the first piece to use screws instead of wood joinery which would be replicated for the last pieces of the collection. Made of salvaged cherry wood and joined with deck screws.

The No.07 stool / side table is a duplicate of the No.06 mini chair without the backrest, using the leftover screws and remaining pieces of offcut wood. Piece No.07 and No.08 were created together and mark the end of both the Furniture for Palestine collection. Made of salvaged cherry wood and joined with deck screws.

No.08 stool / side table was completed as a slightly wider duplicate of No.06 mini chair without the backrest. This piece features lovely sapwood highlights and strong grain variation between offcut pieces. Piece No.07 and No.08 were created together and mark the end of both the Furniture for Palestine collection. Made of salvaged cherry wood and joined with deck screws.
